Anne-Marie immigrated to Australia from Holland 50 years ago and has lived in Bridport for 35 years. She has been an integral part of the local community of Bridport having been involved with the CWA and Bridport RSL Bowls & Community Club for many years.
According to her peers, Anne-Marie is loyal, supportive and the first to put up her hand should help be required.
Tas has been a very active member of the Scottsdale community throughout his adult life. He has been a committed and dedicated Rotarian for 26 years, and board member of the Northbourne Park committee of management for 12 years. His work as Chairman of the Irrigation Development working group of the Dorset Community Economic Development Group has resulted in the development of the extensive network of potential irrigation schemes throughout the north east region.
Tas has two children with his wife Viv; Karen and Tina: and two grandchildren … his pride and joy.
In 2012 Leonie Stein and Kara Rowlings created the Dorset Business and Service Excellent Awards with a view to raise business morale within the Dorset region. An amazing 300 nominations were received and 145 people attended the spectacular gala presentation evening. It is expected that the 2013 awards will create even more interest, lift morale and drive improvement in business service levels.
The Dorset Relay for Life has been held in Scottsdale in 2010 and in 2012. In 2012 the event attracted 15 teams and raised $32,550 for the Cancer Council of Tasmania.
The Legerwood Hall New Year’s Eve Country & Western Dance is has been held annually for the past 6 years and is run by the Legerwood Hall and Reserves Committee. All money raised at the Dance is used to maintain the Memorial Tree Carvings situated in Legerwood.
The Bridport 10 Fun Run is in its second year as part of the North East Rivers Festival. In 2012 it attracted 45 walkers and 83 runners and is set to grow again in 2013.
Lynden’s community spirit developed at a very young age, with him raising money for charities and assisting neighbours with chores while still a primary school student. His involvement with Cubs, and later Scouts, furthered and developed this spirit and at the age of sixteen he approached Council with his proposal to open a coffee shop / youth drop-in centre in the old post office building in Scottsdale. The result was “Ava-Chat’ which ran successfully for some considerable time.
Lynden’s adult years saw him further develop this desire to help others, particularly the younger generation. His involvement with the Christian Church has provided him with a desire to instil into the youth of the district, principles, high morals and a sense of citizenship. To this end at various times he has personally been responsible for transporting young people to all parts of the state, making it possible for them to attend youth concerts and sporting events. This dedication resulted in his being awarded the Young Citizen of the Year Award in 1997, and the Rotary Youth Leadership Award in 2002.
Lynden is currently Chaplain for North East Primary Schools.
After many years’ involvement with the Derby River Derby, Lynden was instrumental in developing the concept of the North East Rivers Festival and is currently its Director. He contributes many hours to the organisation of this yearly festival which has developed into a major tourist event on the Dorset calendar and is successful in bringing people from all over the state to our region.
Lynden interacts with a wide range of people, always displaying understanding and tolerance. He is an excellent role model for the youth of the district with whom he is constantly in touch through his duties as School Chaplain as well as his involvement in after school youth activities. His commitment to the welfare and development of Dorset and its people is admirable. We are indeed fortunate to have someone such as Lynden in our midst, who’s continuous efforts help make our municipality such a great place in which to live.
He is a very worthy recipient of Dorset’s Citizen of the Year Award for 2013.
Lynden Russell and Russel Whitmore
Russel Whitmore has always been a great community volunteer. When Russel was 15 he started helping out at Hilltop Christian Church as an assistant youth leader. When he turned 17 he started coaching the Scottsdale Crows under 13’s Football team. Around the same time he started helping out at the Scottsdale Show on the Gates, in the Food stall and delivering food to the Showies. (He has continued every year without fail)
At 19 he stepped up and became the Youth Leader a Hilltop Christian Church and ran a very successful Friday night program and some Saturdays that was very popular with the boys from his football team and their mates from school. Then Russel went to University to study Agronomy with the intent to help third world countries with their farming practices. In his last year of University he had his first opportunity to go overseas and put his skills into practice and help the farming community in Vietnam.
With Russel’s return to the North East he secured a job with Serve-Ag as an agronomist. He became a volunteer with the North East Rivers Festival helping out with the Derby River Derby and the Pioneer Fishing Competition. Russel is also are involved in a mentoring program working with young men and giving them opportunities to have a go at things like snorkelling and beach activities.
Russel has been on the Scottsdale High School Farm Board for the last three years and was the President in 2011. In the last two years Russel has been volunteering in the Ringarooma School Organic Garden, shearing his knowledge and experience with the students. Russel stepped in to coach the Under 16’s football team for the Scottsdale Crows this in 2012.
Wherever he goes he is always willing to get in and help. Russel is a great example to all around him and a worthy recipient of Young Citizen of the Year.
The Ringarooma School & District Show has been running since 1933. Initially a calf show, it progressed to become the most important annual school / community event for Ringarooma and its surrounds. Run by community members and school parents, the Show was in its 80th year in 2012 and has a long standing tradition of being a celebration of the talent within our community and that of the Ringarooma Primary students as well.
The Ringarooma School and District Show attracts up to 2000 show goers each year.
It continues to be considered an iconic event by our community and is an illustration of the support and pride the community has for the young people attending Ringarooma Primary School in the past and present and ensuring a bright future for those to come.

The Australia Day Ambassador Program is an initiative that sees high achieving and proud Australians attend local Australia Day celebrations in towns and cities across the nation. Australia Day Ambassadors volunteer their time and energy to inspire pride and celebration in hundreds of local communities in cities, regional areas and in the country.
In 2013 the Dorset Municipality Australia Day Ambassador was 2011 Tasmanian Australian of the Year, Deborah De Williams, marathon runner, cancer surivor and founder of the charity Running Pink. Deborah De Williams is the first woman to run a complete, non-continuous lap around Australia. She embarked on her massive 20,000 kilometre journey in 2009 with her border collie, Maggie, at her side. Together they ran from Hobart to Darwin via the east coast and raised $100,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Incredibly, Deborah completed the last 800 kilometres with two broken feet.
Previous Dorset Municipality Australia Day Ambassadors include head of the Australian Commonwealth Games Association, Perry Crosswhte AM, elite sports coach John Quinn, Olympic weightlifter Damian Brown and World Champion Squash Player Sarah Fitz-Gerald AM. For further information on the Australia Day Ambassador Program, please see the Australia Day website.
