2021 Education Scholarship Recipients Announced

Dorset Council are excited to announce the recipients of the 2021 Barry Jarvis Education Scholarships. All scholarships in this program have been named in honour of the late Mayor Barry Jarvis, who was a strong advocate of education in Dorset.

A very high standard of applications were received, and members of the Dorset Council Education Scholarship Selection Panel (the Panel) had a difficult task selecting the worthy recipients.

The University Scholarship is offered to assist a local student with expenses associated with studying at (any) university, providing ongoing financial assistance for 3 years of their chosen course.  In 2021, Tsegayinesh Midson is the successful recipient.  Tsegayinesh is studying a Batchelor of Social Work (with honours) at UTAS Launceston, with the course running for 4 years in duration.  With English being her second language, Tsegayinesh has worked hard to ensure that language isn’t a barrier to complete her studies.  Tsegayinesh will receive $3,000 per year for 3 years to assist with her educational expenses.

Due to the high standard of applications received, and no applications received for the Agribusiness Scholarship, the Panel decided to award a second University Scholarship.  The Panel chose Grace Chatwin as the successful recipient.  Grace is studying a Batchelor of Justice Studies at UTAS Launceston, with the course running for 3 years in duration.  Grace finds the psychological side of crime interesting as well as what makes criminals ‘tick’ which has led her to this study path.  Grace will receive $3,000 per year for 2 years to assist with her educational expenses.

The Apprenticeship/Traineeship scholarship is offered to assist a local community member interested in undertaking an apprenticeship or traineeship by providing additional financial support during such training.  In 2021, Joshua Larkin is the successful recipient.  Joshua completed Year 10 at Scottsdale High School in 2020 and has always been very passionate about cooking and has secured himself an apprenticeship at the Bridport Café as a Chef.  Joshua will receive $1,000 in financial support.

The Scottsdale High School Scholarships are offered to assist local students to continue their studies in Year 11 or Year 12 at Scottsdale High School.  It is hoped providing additional financial support will help local students reach their full potential here in Dorset.  In 2021, the successful recipients received $500 each towards their educational expenses.  8 scholarships were awarded to the following recipients: Nathan Reid-Denman, Emily Bowerman, Emily Hanslow, Ryan Burr, Chloe Singline, Isabella Chatwin, Jacob Doohan and Sophie Smith.

Congratulations to all of the 2021 Barry Jarvis Education Scholarship recipients.
