The establishment of the Blue Derby Mountain Bike Trail Network in 2015 marked a change in the future for the town of Derby and transformed the town into a mountain biking mecca attracting in excess of 60,000 visitors a year from across the world.

This project is to undertake a comprehensive master planning exercise in regards to the town and the surrounding areas infrastructure, recreational and community assets and visitor experience. The aim is for the project to consolidate business, industry, visitor and resident knowledge and data to inform future development and ensure growth, stability and investment into the town, the community and the region as a whole. Part of the project is to undertake consultation with local residents and businesses to determine the needs of the town and region to better improve the liveability and sense of community. Resulting data will inform investment of resources and infrastructure into the region to ensure positive outcomes for the community.

The master planning exercise will include the following:

  • Mountain Bike Precinct Strategy: Evaluate the Blue Derby Mountain Bike Network and identify gaps and opportunities for enhancing the visitor experience. This could include, but is not limited to, the development of additional trails and/or modifications to existing trails.
  • Infrastructure Audit: To evaluate the infrastructure in Derby and the surrounding region and identify gaps and needs.
  • Economic and Social Impact Study: To quantify the economic and social benefit of the Blue Derby Mountain Bike Network on the region.
  • Visitor Experience Strategy: Evaluate the visitor experience in regards to the Blue Derby product and identify gaps and opportunities to enhance and value add.
  • Community Plan: The collaboration of all the elements of the master planning exercise and consolidation into a final report.

This project has been assessed by the Northern Tasmania Development Corporation as one of regional significance under Building Prosperity Projects.

This project is currently seeking further funding.
