Golconda Road is an important transportation link for commuters, tourism and freight between Dorset and the regional city of Launceston and further to the North West and South, as well as George Town Council, with the road a significant freight link to the port and industrial area of Bell Bay. Both City of Launceston and George Town Council have supplied Letters of Support to the Golconda Road Upgrade project.
Golconda Road is listed in both Councils Road Strategy 2022-2027 (Action item 1.2) and Priority Projects Plan 2023-2025. Councils road strategy for the network identifies key freight and tourist links both within the municipality and adjoining municipalities and to progressively improve the safety and productivity of these routes while maintaining the condition and safety of the remaining network.
The project will result in improved safety and reduced operating costs by widening and upgrading the pavement to HPV standard and implementing safety features. Upgrading Golconda Road will provide access to 26m B Double (68 Tonne) as compared to the current 19m access (45.4 Tonne) - an approximate 50% increase.
Golconda Road requires a holistic treatment along its entire length. This is currently being achieved via updating sections as resources and funding become available.
At this stage the project has the following in progress:
SECTION | DETAILS | STATUS |
Golconda Road Pavement Renewal | Rehabilitate 650m of pavement | Funded under Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program Phase 4 (Part A and B) |
