Council and Tasmania State Emergency Service sign three year Memorandum of Understanding

Public Notices

A new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed by Tasmania State Emergency Service (SES) and Dorset Council, with National Volunteer Week beginning yesterday.

Council and Tasmania State Emergency Service sign three year Memorandum of Understanding

The three-year MoU, includes an annual monetary contribution from the Council, which will support the ongoing operations of the Dorset SES Unit.

Dorset Council General Manager John Marik stated that Council have collaboratively been working on the MoU for several months with SES Northern Regional Manager David Nicholls.

“This MoU will give both parties funding certainty and clearly define responsibilities in relation to the provision and maintenance of the Dorset Volunteer SES Unit.”

Dorset Council Commissioner Andrew Wardlaw stated that Council are very supportive of the Dorset SES Unit and understands the importance of the MoU and the on-going annual contribution

“Council acknowledge the contribution of the Rotary Club of Scottsdale towards funding the lighting and storm trailer, with the MoU recognising that this will remain a Dorset community asset.”

“The Dorset Volunteer SES Unit provide an extremely important service for the community and much of the operations are undertaken by a committed volunteer base. Council are taking the opportunity to announce the MoU during National Volunteer Week, to recognise the efforts of volunteers and encourage recruitment within the community.”

SES Northern Regional Manager David Nicholls said the MoU is a fantastic outcome.

“Our Dorset Unit volunteers perform road crash rescue duties, and respond to emergencies including storms and floods in the local area,” he said.

“They also assist with rescues when mountain bike incidents occur, something that is becoming more frequent as the activity becomes more popular around Dorset.”

“The MoU also means ownership of a heavy road crash rescue truck, a rapid intervention and road crash rescue vehicle, and a lightning and storm trailer is being transferred to the SES.”

“We are very grateful for the transfer of the vehicles, as this helps us to implement future planning across the broader northern district.”

SES Unit Manager Dale Mott said the council has always been a great support to the Unit, but with the signing of the MoU it provides a reassurance and commitment by Council to continue that support going forward.

“The MoU will provide a clear understanding of the Council and SES responsibilities, that the Dorset community will benefit from,” he said.
