Dorset Council is urging residents and visitors to help combat an increasing wave of vandalism and malicious damage targeting public toilets in Bridport.
Public facilities in Bridport have been targeted on multiple occasions recently, including over the last three consecutive weekends, with repeated attacks causing significant damage. These ongoing incidents not only inconvenience residents and visitors but also create a poor impression of our community. This is particularly disappointing for our residents, who take great pride in Bridport’s beautiful foreshore area and work hard to keep it welcoming for everyone.
Mayor Rhys Beattie stated that in many cases, the graffiti is deeply inappropriate and upsetting to those who encounter it. "Council’s Town Maintenance Officers and Cleaning Team act quickly to repair damage and remove graffiti; however, at times, members of the public are unfortunately exposed to the results of this poor behaviour before it can be rectified."
"Responding to vandalism diverts Council’s time and resources away from other important community projects and the maintenance of parks, playgrounds, and public spaces", said the Mayor.
The cost to ratepayers continues to grow with each incident, as Council works to restore facilities.
Dorset Council is working closely with Tasmania Police to address the issue and encourages anyone who witnesses suspicious activity to report it directly to the Police.
Incidents of vandalism or damage can also be reported to Council to assist in prioritising repairs and identifying repeat problem areas.
