Due to proximity to the road, the avenue poses an increased risk for larger vehicles. During the site meeting, all large vehicles travelling south had repositioned slightly towards the centre of the road. If proper and proactive pruning is not undertaken, it is likely that foliage will continue to encroach into the roadway, increasing the risk to road users.
Dorset Council has engaged an arborist to provide an Arboriculture Assessment for the significant avenue of semi-mature Himalayan Cypresses trees along Ringarooma Road, south of Lovers Lane, Ringarooma.
The report has included:
- Identification and assessment of the trees.
- Review of tree protection legislation at the local, state, and federal level.
- Requested information about the avenue from TreeNET’s Avenues of Honour project, Heritage Tasmania, and the National Trust.
- Provided proactive management options that maintain the significance of the avenue, while considering future encroachment onto Ringarooma Road.
In accordance with the report recommendations to maintain a consistent avenue of foliage without gaps, pruning must therefore be done proactively by specialist hedging. This being 500 mm deep to 4.5 m high for most of the Himalayan Cypress avenue. This pruning will provide better clearance to maintain growth from Ringarooma Road.
A commitment to an ongoing 3-yearly maintenance regime will see this significant tree avenue unwavering for future generations.
The public will be notified when maintenance is scheduled to be undertaken.
