The establishment of the Blue Derby Mountain Bike Trail Network in 2015 marked a change in the future for the town of Derby and transformed the town into a mountain biking mecca attracting in excess of 45,000 visitors a year from across the world.

This project is to undertake a comprehensive master planning exercise that will set the strategic direction for the township and the trails to ensure that services and infrastructure continue to meet the needs of residents, visitors and the surrounding communities.

The Derby Master Plan is a key part of a broader Dorset: Future Ready program with a suite of strategic plans and documents being prepared for the key towns and locations within the municipality.  These documents will focus on improving community livability, sustainability and economic development.  Derby, with its world class trails and location, sits as a central and pivotal point within Dorset's proposed regional trails network project, City to the Sea, which will value add to the Blue Derby product for the north east Tasmania region, broadening the visitor markets.

This project has been assessed by the Northern Tasmania Development Corporation as one of regional significance under Building Prosperity Projects. (Destination Derby - Community Master Planning).

Phase One (Project Initiation) commenced in June 2026 with the development of the grant deed and proposed project scope.

This project is being funded by a 2026 Tasmanian State Election Commitment.
