2026 Barry Jarvis Education Scholarship Recipients
Dorset Council provides eight scholarships annually for local community members to further their education. These have been named in honour of the late Mayor Barry Jarvis, who was a strong advocate of education in Dorset.

Barry Jarvis University Scholarship
This scholarship is intended to assist a local student with expenses associated with studying at (any) university, providing ongoing financial assistance for 3 years of their chosen course.
In 2026, Will Hadley was the successful recipient. Will is currently studying a Bachelor of Animal Science (Livestock) at the University of New England in Armidale NSW, regularly travelling interstate to attend each semester. Will has a strong interest in seedstock and genetics with a desire to work directly with local livestock producers to assist them in achieving the best outcomes for their herds. He believes that Dorset is full of potential in the agricultural industry and can see the benefits of having young, educated industry professionals return to our community to further strengthen Dorset in this field.
Aside from his commitment to his studies, Will also operates his own Angus Stud, was awarded “Young Professional of the Year” in the Dorset People and Business Awards in 2026 and represented Australia at the FarmFair International Expo in Canada. Will continually demonstrates excellent leadership skills with a drive for continuous development and improvement.
Once graduated, Will is looking forward to being able to return to Dorset to live and pursue a meaningful career that fosters his passion for the beef industry and wider agricultural field.
Will will receive $3,000 per year for 3 years to assist with his educational expenses.
Barry Jarvis Apprenticeship / Traineeship Scholarship
This scholarship is intended to assist a local community member interested in undertaking an apprenticeship or traineeship by providing additional financial support during such training. In 2026, the scholarship selection panel decided that due to no applications being received for the Agribusiness Scholarship category, that this unused portion of funds should be re-allocated here to support all four of the commendable Apprenticeship & Traineeship applicants for 2026.
Archie Cron – Archie completed year 10 at Scottsdale High School in 2025 and is currently undertaking a Certificate III Carpentry Apprenticeship with local builder, Chris Burr from CB Building. Archie is very committed to his apprenticeship, is always willing to learn new things and to help others. This work ethic and initiative is also reflected when assisting his parents by working in their bakery in Bridport if needed. Archie is passionate about his work and the positive impact that new projects have for our Dorset community. In his spare time, Archie loves to go camping around Tasmania and has previously played as the lead guitarist in his band. Archie is pleased to be able to continue to live and work in his local area for the foreseeable future.
Abby Samec – Abby completed year 10 at Scottsdale High School in 2025 with excellent results across all areas of her study and is currently undertaking a Certificate III Engineering Fabrication apprenticeship with local business, Padgett Group. Abby has a strong passion for contributing to our local community which is reflected with her involvement with her local netball club where she is a proven team player and regularly volunteers her time with rostered duties. Abby enjoys hands on work with mechanical and welding projects and has a desire to continue to learn more about heavy machinery and fabrication. Abby intends to continue to live and work in Dorset which supports her intention to contribute to local business’ by applying her skills and knowledge to innovate and improve existing practices within the industry.
Jake Forsyth – Jake completed year 10 at Scottsdale High School in 2025 with impressive end of year results and is currently a Certificate III Agriculture apprenticeship with Forsyth Pastoral Pty Ltd, where Jake is proud to be the sixth generation of his family to work on the farm. Jake shares his family farm’s commitment to supporting the community by employing local people and supporting local businesses, helping to strengthen the Dorset municipality. Jake is a founding member of Rural Youth in Dorset which demonstrates his strong passion for leadership and initiative to contribute positively to our local community. Jake intends on continuing to reside and work in Dorset with the long-term goal of eventually running the family farm.
Leila-Jayne Atkins – Leila-Jayne completed year 10 at Scottsdale High School in 2024 with outstanding results and is currently undertaking a Certificate III Hospitality Traineeship at the House Paddock in Scottsdale. Leila-Jayne has a passion for providing quality hospitality service to our local community and those who are visiting our region. She enjoys meeting new people, being able to provide local knowledge to customers and the opportunity to continually improve her skills and bring our community together. Outside of work, Leila-Jayne leads an active lifestyle and has a strong passion for football which is demonstrated with her involvement with the Tassie Devils Talent League. Through her involvement with this, she has learnt valuable leadership skills and has taken the initiative to travel independently around Tasmania and the Mainland to maintain her commitment to training and rostered games. She is also studying a Certificate III in Fitness to further support her interests in helping other by becoming a Personal Trainer. Leila-Jayne intends to remain in Dorset upon the completion of her training as she enjoys working within the community and there are lots of opportunities for employment in the hospitality industry.
Archie, Abby, Jake and Leila-Jayne will each receive $850 in financial support.
Barry Jarvis Scottsdale High School Scholarships
These scholarships are intended to assist local students to continue their studies in Year 11 or 12 at Scottsdale High School. It is hoped providing additional financial support will help local students reach their full potential here in Dorset.
In 2026, the successful recipients received $500 each towards their education expenses.
Scholarships were awarded to the following recipients:
Monique Mahoney (Yr 12), Molly Fletcher (Yr 12), Maigen Riley (Yr 12), Aliqua Fursey (Yr 11) and Cody Johnson (Yr 12).
Barry Jarvis Agribusiness Scholarship
This scholarship is intended to provide additional financial support to a local student enrolled in the University of Tasmania's associate degree in Agribusiness. One scholarship was available in 2026 totaling $2,500.
