Dorset Council provides eight scholarships annually for local community members to further their education. These have been named in honour of the late Mayor Barry Jarvis, who was a strong advocate of education in Dorset.

Barry Jarvis University Scholarship
This scholarship is intended to assist a local student with expenses associated with studying at (any) university, providing ongoing financial assistance for 3 years of their chosen course.
In 2025, Tessa Walters was the successful recipient. Tessa is currently in her second year of a 3-year Bachelor of Health and Medical Science Degree online at Charles Sturt University, regularly flying interstate to attend intensive school periods when required, which will then be followed by a further 2 years at UTAS for her Master of Occupational Therapy.
Tessa is an active member of her community, has a passion for sport and has not only represented Dorset in both netball and basketball, but she also provides leadership and is a role-model for the younger junior teams that she has co-coached.
Once graduated, Tessa is looking forward to being able to provide her Occupational Therapy skills to the community of Dorset and assist with improving the quality of life for those in need of what she will be able to offer.
Tessa will receive $3,000 per year for 3 years to assist with her educational expenses.
Barry Jarvis Apprenticeship / Traineeship Scholarship
This scholarship is intended to assist a local community member interested in undertaking an apprenticeship or traineeship by providing additional financial support during such training.
In 2025, Deagen Young was the successful recipient. Deagen completed Year 10 at Scottsdale High School in 2024 with outstanding results including multiple end of year awards and is currently undertaking a plumbing apprenticeship with Gen 3 Plumbing & Gas in Scottsdale. Deagen is committed to his apprenticeship, always willing to learn new skills and regularly travels to Hobart to attend TAFE.
Making the most of every opportunity that comes his way, Deagen pours his heart and soul into what he does and that extends to not only with his apprenticeship but also the local sporting groups he is associated with.
Deagen is pleased to be able to continue to live and work in his local area. Deagen will receive $1,000 in financial support.
Barry Jarvis Scottsdale High School Scholarships
These scholarships are intended to assist local students to continue their studies in Year 11 or 12 at Scottsdale High School. It is hoped providing additional financial support will help local students reach their full potential here in Dorset.
In 2025, the successful recipients received $500 each towards their education expenses.

Barry Jarvis Agribusiness Scholarship
This scholarship is intended to provide additional financial support to a local student enrolled in the University of Tasmania's associate degree in Agribusiness. One scholarship was available in 2025 totaling $2,500.
There were no applications received in 2025 for this Scholarship stream.
