Media Release | $120 Million Sideling Upgrade a Multi-Generational Missed Opportunity Without B-Double Standard

Dorset Mayor Rhys Beattie has said the Council’s original Tasman Highway ‘Sideling’ business case, which secured the funding, was predicated on upgrading the road to a B-Double rated highway and shortening the journey via a new realignment through Corkerys Road. Mayor Beattie described the current plan by the Department of State Growth as a multi-generational missed opportunity and called on the State Government to reconsider its position.

Council held a Closed Session Council Meeting on Monday, 19 May 2025, where Councillors discussed the reappointment of current General Manager, Mr John Marik, whose current employment contract was due for review in December 2025. Announcement | Acting Deputy Mayor Appointment

At a Special Meeting of Council held this morning, Councillor Edwina Powell was appointed as Acting Deputy Mayor for Council. As a by-election process is currently being undertaken by the Tasmanian Electoral Commission to fill the role of Mayor, Acting Deputy Mayor Powell will be the Acting Mayor until the result of that by-election is announced. This is expected to be in early April 2025.
