At a Special Meeting of Council held this morning, Councillor Edwina Powell was elected as Dorset Deputy Mayor for the remainder of the current term, being until the end of 2026. Councillor Powell acted in this role earlier in the year while the By-Elections were being undertaken, and we congratulate her on being elected by her peers.
Grant Success for Dorset | Play Our Way Funding Stream
More opportunities in the North East for women and girls in sport thanks to Play Our Way. Women and girls in the North East will find it easier and more enjoyable to play sport and be active as a result of a $499,946 grant to Dorset Council.
Council is commencing stormwater upgrades between the Scottsdale Recreation Ground and William Street.
This work will at times impact access to the Dog Park and Rail Trail with temporary access arrangements put in place as work progresses.
Dorset Council was successful in the Waste and Resource Recovery Board High Priority Infrastructure Grants Program with funding of $43,908 to be used to complete the Dorset Resource Recovery Project.

At a Special Meeting of Council held this morning, Councillor Edwina Powell was appointed as Acting Deputy Mayor for Council. As a by-election process is currently being undertaken by the Tasmanian Electoral Commission to fill the role of Mayor, Acting Deputy Mayor Powell will be the Acting Mayor until the result of that by-election is announced. This is expected to be in early April 2025.
Compulsory by-elections will be conducted by postal ballot to fill the vacancies of mayor and one councillor on the Dorset Council, following the resignation of Mayor Greg Howard on 23 January 2025.
The Tasmanian Electoral Commission has conducted the recount of votes to fill the vacancies created by the resignation of Anna Coxen, Beth Donoghue and Leonie Stein.
TasWater Notice of Work – Scottsdale – Water Main Renewal
As part of TasWater's commitment to investing in new and improved water infrastructure, they will be renewing approximately 200 metres of water main on King Street, Scottsdale (see map).
The Tasmanian Electoral Commission has conducted the recount of votes to fill the vacancies created by the resignation of Jerrod Nichols and Dale Jessup.
Council acknowledges on behalf of the community, the service and contribution of the following Councillors to Council and the Dorset community during their time as elected members in light of their recent resignations.
Child and Family Learning Centre Announcement | Scottsdale
The Tasmanian Government has advised Council that a new Child and Family Learning Centre will be constructed in Scottsdale, with works expected to commence in 2026. The proposed location for the facility is on the Scottsdale Primary School site.
On Thursday, 23 January 2025, Council held their annual awards reception to celebrate those within our community who have made a significant contribution to Dorset at the Scottsdale Mechanics Hall.
